New Methods Of Producing Solar Power

As time passes, more sophisticated technology is used in harnessing electricity from the sun's energy, which makes it possible to have a more widespread use of this alternative source of power. It is the belief of many experts that the advanced technology, coupled with rising demand will make the use of solar energy more cost effective in the near future.

This future is not expected to take place in a couple of decades as was previously thought, but just in a matter of a few years. One of the things that have helped to shift the opinions of both individuals and governments is the skyrocketing prices of oil. Different groups are currently advocating for the use of alternative sources of energy that are renewable, which is not the case with fossil fuel.

One of the things called for is a reliable source, and no other source matches the sun in this aspect. Even though the use of solar power has not yet been widespread, homes that have installed it have a number of advantages. The power generated is both clean and silent, with no monthly payments. On the other hand, the value of such homes are significantly higher. In addition, the people who use solar energy receive some benefits from the government as they in turn give more power to the supply grids.

Currently, there are three basic methods that are used in harnessing the sun's power - photovoltaic cells, plate collectors, and heliostats. They may either be constructed or installed in such a way that they receive direct rays from the sun. The use of more advanced technology results in more discoveries that contribute towards better improvisation. Presently, use is made of polymer foils that are as thin as paper, which makes them 200 times lighter than the collecting plates made of glass that were previously used. This has a number of advantages, such as making it possible to have mass productions. The price is also reduced significantly. The glass that was previously used required substrates that were costly. In addition, there was need of other materials for support as a result of the great weight.

Given the lightweight nature of polymer foil, it is even possible to attach them to wall surfaces. In addition to the polymer foil, researchers are also using nano technology in the manufacture of plastic solar cells. These types of cells are capable of harnessing power even from infrared rays, which means that they will be more productive even when it is cloudy. They are therefore five times more productive. Infrared rays consist of as much as half of the sun's energy, which was previously not converted to electricity.

Such recent discoveries will not only make the new solar panels more efficient but also less expensive, making this renewable energy more accessible to people.
