The Benefits of Using Solar Energy

While there is little we can do about such things as global warming as a way of reversing the damage that has already been done, we are free to choose whether to use conventional or alternative sources of energy.

One of the best alternative energy sources comes from solar power. In order to able to make a better choice, you should be aware of its benefits or lack thereof.

So, what are the benefits of using solar energy?

Solar energy is both free and available in abundance. It is also very reliable as the sun will always rise on a daily basis under normal circumstances. This is one area where it really stands out against such things as fossil fuel, which are not renewable and there is constant need for more raw material. This means that with time, the sources of fossil fuel are getting gradually depleted.

Another benefit of solar energy is that it is very clean, causing no pollution to the environment in general. Instead, the sun's heat actually helps in maintaining a clean environment and good eco balance. On the other hand, the use of oil creates a great deal of pollution in the air, soil, and even water. It is estimated that every household generates as much as 22,000 pounds of carbon monoxide every year for its electrical needs produced from fossil fuel.

The solar panels that convert the sun's energy to electricity go about their work very silently. The only thing that may make a sound is the mechanical part that is sometimes used to align the panel with the sun's direction, and many people do not use such a device. On the other hand, the extraction of fossil fuel is quite a noisy undertaking.

Another benefit of solar energy comes from the fact that the panels require very little maintenance, if any at all. The maintenance is really just needed on the ones using the mechanical turning parts. As far as oil is concerned, a lot of maintenance is needed in many areas, not to mention the constant fluctuation of fuel prices. There are a number of forces in the market that influence the prices, and the forces themselves may be manipulated.

Now that we have seen the great benefits of solar energy, what are its drawbacks?

One of the main obstacles to the use of solar energy relates to the costly price of the needed solar panels. The solar energy itself is free, but the overall cost of installing the necessary equipment is beyond the reach of many people. When you take the amount of power required and the quality of solar panels, the prices can easily get fairly high. Yet this is the cheapest option. The other alternative of producing for mass consumption has other costly requirements like the construction of supply grid.

As you can see, the benefits are greater.
