Solar Energy
Bright Future For The Use Of Solar Energy
Using solar power for home requirements has been around for some time now, it is just that it has not yet been widespread due to a variety of factors. In fact, solar energy has been used since time immemorial in different ways and buildings were constructed with the sun in mind.
Advances in technology have made it possible to employ solar power in a number of other uses that were not formerly known. There have been a steady rise in the cost of energy that has prompted people to look for other methods of getting the needed energy. The sun once again offered a good opportunity. One of the things in which sun's energy is applied in is the production of electricity. This technology has been used from the 1950s although it was previously largely taken for granted. The use of more advanced technology has made it possible to manufacture sophisticated solar cells that are more efficient.
One of the great benefits of solar energy is the fact that it is free. However, you will only get this free energy when you have bought the necessary gadgets for converting it in the first place. Solar panels are made of photovoltaic cells that are arranged into modules. The cells are made of semi-conducting materials. Although the solar panels are often mounted on rooftops, they may as well be mounted at any place where they can get as much sunlight as possible. This means that you should take your area into consideration when selecting the best position. Some solar panels are installed with tracking systems that help in changing their direction relative to the direction of the sun. In the voltaic cells, electrons break off from the atoms when the sun's rays fall on them. It is the movement of the electrons that results in the generation of electricity.
There are a number of methods of storing this power depending on the intended use. If the purpose is water heating, either pumps or gravity is used to circulate water within the cells and store the heated water in a tank.
Although the use of solar power is very convenient, this method still produces just around 80% of the energy requirements of any given household at best. It is therefore often supplemented by electric power from the supply grids. However, there are more advances that will soon make it possible for those who like to fulfill all their energy requirements from solar power.
