Various Applications Of Solar Energy

Within just an hour, the earth receives power from the sun that suffices to fulfill the energy needs of the whole wide world for one year and have some to spare. And this energy is freely available, causes no pollution, and is renewable.

There are a number of methods of harnessing the solar power for a variety of uses. This article will highlight some of the uses into which solar energy is put.

* Grid-tied residential homes:

While you currently use electricity from the supply grid, you can supplement this with solar energy. There are different reasons that make people opt for this method. Some people would like to have backup power in case of any failures. There are also those who may still be getting electricity fairly cheaply and would still want to take advantage of this. Then some people live in areas that do not get sufficient amount of sunshine at all times. There is another benefit in using this method in that you can actually reverse the reading on your meter when you produce more solar energy than you consume. You will thus be supplying the grid with the surplus electricity, and instead of paying for electricity, you are the one who will be paid. And in case you will still need to use some of the electricity from the supply grid, you can minimize your expenses by using solar energy to power security lights that usually consume more power. In general, you can use solar energy for the sections that demand more energy.

* Corporate Buildings:

A number of companies opt for the installation of solar panels in order to save on electricity bills in the long run. The initial cost is very high but thereafter there is hardly any maintenance cost.

* Off-grid residential homes:

Solar power is the ideal method of powering homes that are far from the supply grid. Solar panel is also good at powering a variety of stand-alone equipment. Some of the places that can make use of this method are holiday homes that have ample levels of sunlight. In fact, many other institutions can use this method, from schools to clinics.

* Street lights and signs:

Street lights and signs are among the things that consume a lot of electric energy, which is mainly drawn from the supply grids. They can instead be made to use solar energy that is stored at daytime for their night requirements. This reduces the demand for fossil fuel and in the end becomes more cost efficient.

* Solar energy for recreational uses:

Such things as marine vehicles are relatively economical on their power consumption and it is even cheaper and more environmentally friendly when their batteries are charged by solar power.
